During the Inca occupation of the region (around A.D. 1470 – 1532), this island was the destination of ritual pilgrimages from all around the empire. However, recently recovered archaeological evidence indicates that the sacred nature of these islands extends back at least to the Tiawanaku Empire (A.D. 600 – 1,100). Prior to this time, humans first occupied the island as early as 2000 B.C., and have continuously lived there for millennia. The natural beauty of this island is impossible to describe; you simply should visit it to appreciate.

Uyuni is the highest and the largest salt desert in the world. It is located south-west off Potosi at an average altitude of 4,000m. The Salt fields of Uyuni and Coipasa are unique, with unusual fauna for this region such as pink and white flamingos, geese, ducks, coots, etc. Our tours (in combination of 4-WD transport and daily hikes) will take us to one of the most impressive landscapes in South America. The best months for visiting this amazing area are from May to November when the dry weather allows traveling without many dangers. In the rainy season (December to April), we can find muddy bays which can block the vehicles. The icy winds, the low temperatures (-10º C to -15º C) and the fact that drinking water is not present in this area, make this beautiful place a dangerous one, if you venture to cross it without an experienced guide.
Note: In our Salar de Uyuni tours, we use comfortable jeeps for maximum five participants (+ guide). Accommodations are in small simple small hotels/lodges with rooms for two people and with private facilities.
Starting from Uyuni.
At 8 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel in Uyuni to start our journey driving south towards the train cemetery where we make a short stop to see the remains of nineteenth and early 20th century steam locomotives which were used for the mining industry of Uyuni and Potosi. Then our drive will take us towards the Galaxy cave, a dried sub aqueous cavern, formed before the ice age, corresponding to volcanic eruptions on waters of the Minchin lake (today Salar). From the ceiling of the cavern amazing displays of calcareous bodies with capricious forms of solidification of the magma in contact with water can be seen. Then we enter the spectacular flat salt desert of Uyuni giving us amazing views of the Salt Desert surrounded by volcanos. We will drive towards the shores of Isla Pescado (Fish Island) a rocky hill covered in trichocerus cacti. A large population of viscachas (Andean rodents) inhabits its rocky slopes, which also afford views of the flat region that are reminiscent of the Polar region, dominated by the blue and white colours. We can hike up to the top of one of the summits of the hill and enjoy a fantastic view of the spectacular flat, White Sea of hexagonal salt tiles. Then a short drive will take us towards Isla Incahuasi (Home of the Inca), another interesting hilly outcrop situated in the center of the Salar with rock formations containing the remains of corals and seashells. On the island, we find species of cactus that grows up to 7m tall, at a rate of 1 centimeter per year, making them up to 700 years old. Here we make a hike up to the summit of the hill from where we get extraordinarys view of the surreal Salar de Uyuni. After lunch in the local small restaurant, we will continue our drive towards the small village of Colchani, which lies beside the Salar de Uyuni and is a home of the Cooperative Rosario – the main plant for the iodisation of salt. After visiting the artisanal salt factory, we will then make our final drive towards your hotel in Uyuni (hotel accommodations are not included). End of our services. Lunch.

Madidi Park and Rurrenabaque
The small city of Rurrenabaque is the starting point for a trip to the Amazonian pampas and the jungle of Bolivia. This little city, perched between the surrounding jungle and the River Beni, is one of the loveliest of the Bolivian lowland villages. The rainforest and pampas are abundant in wildlife and many visitors come to see anacondas, capybaras (the world’s largest rodent), monkeys, turtles, macaws, caimans, piranhas, and even to swim with the pink dolphins. The tapir and armadillo are difficult to spot, living often deep in the impenetrable tangle of the jungle, but there is plenty of bird life to be seen and heard. The jungle and pampas are also home to many species of insects and spiders, including an unfortunate abundance of mosquitoes. Best time to visit this area is from May to November (dry season).
Tours Highlights:

Fauna & Flora
Rurrenabaque
Fauna at the Pampas Area of Bolivia:
The Pampas are home to habitat-restricted endemics and endangered species such as Manned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), Marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus), White woodpecker (Melanerpes candidus), and Red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis), to name but a few. Large specimens of Anaconda and Tapir, also been observed at close range on past trips to the area. Associated oxbow lakes close to the Heath River are home to noisy families of Giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), although some of these lakes are now infested with another giant, the Paiche (Arapaima gigas) – a large predatory fish introduced to Lake Sandoval, near Puerto Maldonado (in Peru), in the 1960’s.
Day 1: We leave Rurrenabaque by car at 9:00 a.m. to the Yacuma River Reserve. After 3 hours, we arrive at Ecolodge Caracoles which is located on the shores of the Yacuma River. After lunch, you will have time to relax and, in the afternoon, we make a boat trip where you have the chance to see wildlife such as caimans, alligators, monkeys, capybaras, pink river dolphins, turtles and numerous species of birds.
Day 2: In the morning, we walk through the wetlands looking for anacondas and alligators. When we return to our lodge, we will have lunch and time to take a nap. In the afternoon, we can swim with pink river dolphins (in the rainy season).
